Sometimes there are more stories to be discovered in a book than those written by the author!
Have you ever wondered about the inscriptions you sometimes find in old books? An elegant signature or scrawled autograph written by previous owners are seen by some as simply defacing the book (not to mention devaluing it), while others (like us) see it as part of the history of the book itself.
Looking into the lives of those who did leave their mark on a page can give us a fascinating glimpse into times past and, when we can, we try and bring the memory of these people back into the light.

New Chapter is proud to host Wigtown's very own bookshop podcast hosted (mostly) by Jayne Baldwin from Foggie Toddle books, with regular guests, Lou from New Chapter and Ruth Anderson from Well Read Books and a host of special guests.

New Chapter is also home to the Kirkyard Chronicles, an ongoing project that looks into the lives of ordinary people buried in Wigtownshire's old kirkyards.
What started as an update to the already transcribed memorial inscriptions, soon developed into a series of talks (which still happen) and is currently being developed into a book for 2026 and a series of podcasts.
Its aim is to bring the lives of those who walked this earth long before us back into focus so that they are no longer just fading, weather-worn names on old gravestones.

We don't specialise in any particular field so we have a bit of everything, from fiction, non-fiction, mystery, romance, history, local, religion, sci-fi, fantasy, and just the downright odd.

Short answer - yes. Long answer, not all. You'd be surprised how many people try and sell us a box of books they've looked up on eBay and think are worth a fortune. Don't be upset if we refuse to buy your grans Reader's Digest collection.
